Legend of Vasant Panchami
Shiva was in deep penance when Tarakasura who was given boon by Shiva was wreaking havoc everywhere. The boon was that he can only be killed by Shiva’s son. It was unlikely that Shiva would marry soon after Sati gave up her body.
Meanwhile, Sati was reincarnated as Parvati and took deep penance to please Shiva. However, he remained unmoved. Then, it was on Vasant Panchami that Parvati sent Kamdev to break the penance of Shiva. Kaamdev puts the arrow on Shiva’s chest but when Shiva opened his eyes, he turned Kamdev into ashes for disturbing the penance.
Following this event, Parvati got married to Shiva and thus came Kartikeya who later destroyed Tarakasura.
It also said that on Vasant Panchami, Goddess Saraswati was born through the mind of Brahma. Goddess Saraswati is an eternal goddess of Wisdom, purity and intelligence and is usually dressed in yellow or white.
Rituals of Vasant Panchami 2025
Several regions follow their own version of Vasant Panchami rituals. In punjab, people fly kites, whereas in Maharashtra newly married couples get blessings of Saraswati.
On the other hand, people in Bihar worship Sun God, and those in Rajasthan wear Jasmine mala on this day.
Here’s how you can make Vasant Panchami special and get the blessings of Goddess Saraswati.
- Get up early in the morning on February 2nd Feb and take snan.
- Clean your temple, if you have an idol of Saraswati you can give her a bath with milk and water.
- Offer dhoop, incense sticks, light a ghee dia and then chant this 108 times.
सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि ।
विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा ॥
Sarasvati Namastubhyam Varade Kaama-Ruupinni |
Vidya-arambham Karissyaami Siddhir-Bhavatu Me Sadaa ||
- Followed by this, chant the saraswati mantra ‘Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah’ 108 times.
- Offer sweet yellow rice, and 3 besan ladoo to Saraswati as bhog and then distribute it as prasad to others. Other sweets and fruits like Ber are also offered.

You have to draw this Saraswati yantra 108 times while chanting the mantra ‘Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah’
Once done, you can offer 107 yantra in a flowing river or in hawan after some days. And keep 108th yantra for worshipping.
