Why Kartik is Called As Holiest Month of Hindu Calendar?

There are two different phases of life. One is Uttarayana and the other is Dakshinayan. Dakshinayan is called Sadhana phase, whereas Uttarayan is

enlightenment phase where you reap all the benefits of your sadhana. Dakshinayan starts on June 21. During the Dakshinayan, you can reap the fruits of any sadhana you began, making Kartik Mass the holiest month in the Hindu year.In Mahabharata, we saw that Pitamaha Bhishma waited for about 58 nights for the winter solstice or the first day of Uttarayana to die. He didn’t want to die when the sun was in the south as if he died in Dakshinayan, he would never have reaped the benefits of Sadhana.

Deepam is a significant ritual that’s followed all over India. This is because the light coming from dia shows our transition from one phase (Sadhana) to another (Enlightenment). This shows we are now ready to move to the next stage of life.

Legend of Kartik Purnima

There are several legends of Kartik Purnima. We will look at each of them. Once upon time, three powerful demon brothers, known as Tripura Asuras, created three cities (Tripura) in the sky. These cities were filled with treasures and weapons that threatened the gods and the universe. They became a menace to the heavens, wreaking havoc and terror.

The gods, unable to contain the demons’ power, approached Lord Shiva for help. Shiva, in his form as Tripurantaka, mounted a chariot and destroyed the three cities with a single arrow, which was fired on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima. This shows victory of good over evil and Shiva devotees celebrate this victory with joy.

Next comes the Legend of Mastya Avatar. The legend of Matsya, the fish avatar of Lord Vishnu, is also connected to Kartik Purnima. According to ancient texts, Vishnu took the form of a gigantic fish to save the Vedas and protect the world from an impending flood.

Vishnu warned King Manu of a devastating flood and guided him to gather all living beings in a massive boat. As the flood waters rose, Vishnu, as the Matsya fish, towed the boat to safety. This act of intervention, performed to preserve life on Earth, is commemorated during Kartik Purnima as a celebration of Vishnu’s benevolence and protection.

Third legend is of Tulsi. Tulsi, or the holy basil plant, is considered one of the most sacred plants in Hinduism. Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of Tulsi and Lord Vishnu, is performed on the day of Kartik Purnima.

The story goes that Tulsi was a pious woman named Vrinda, who was married to the demon king Jalandhar. She was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, and her purity and devotion protected Jalandhar from harm. Lord Vishnu ultimately took the form of Jalandhar to deceive Vrinda, breaking her vow of purity to help the gods defeat Jalandhar. Vrinda, heartbroken, was reborn as the Tulsi plant. Lord Vishnu blessed her, saying she would be married to him each year on Kartik Purnima. This ritual, known as Tulsi Vivah, is observed with reverence.

Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. According to Sikh traditions, Guru Nanak was born on this day in 1469. From an early age, Guru Nanak showed signs of spiritual depth and enlightenment. His teachings emphasized unity, equality, and the oneness of humanity and God. His birth is celebrated by Sikhs worldwide with kirtans, processions, and community service, embodying his message of compassion and humility.
